Both plates have a sun and moon side to them. Someone speculated that it the round area was to hold a bowl of dip maybe, and the moon to hold the chips. I just think of them as Sun&Moon plates. I have two.

From the side you can see the cats are made from a clay slab draped over a cylinder to produce the shape.
